2014 Year in Review (My Blueprint)

BYODFAM!!!! Aww man last post for 2014! What a journey it's been thus far. It's only right I do a recap of this year. Like I always say to know where your going you have to know where you been. So real quick:

Jan-May 2014- Working 90 hours a week trying to figure out life. Making money but feeling there is more to life then clocking in and out. I remember watching the owner of the car dealership I worked at walking around to each building and speaking with all the staff. Then I realized this is his dream. And I was hired to further his dream. Reminded me of the saying "if you don't chase your dream you will be helping someone else's  dream come true"

June 2014- Vacation to California that helped me put my ideas into a brand:Be Your Own Dad. BYOD for short where we use our struggles to motivate us to go further in life. Growing up without a father helped me push myself to accomplish my goals. (Hence how I came up with the name) I know others can do the same.

July 2014- Created the website, blog, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube channel for the brand. Took the opportunity to give back to my community and sponsor the T+T Summer Basketball League that I am involved in.

August 2014- The brand was recognized in my city's newspaper for "Providing Positivity" to my community through the basketball league.

September 2014- Move to Calfornia from Boston to pursue my dream in being a TV personality.

October 2014-Create the #BYODFAM on Instagram where one person can help the other. We can motivate each other by sharing similarities in our posts. Created the Vine profile as well.

November-Sponsored a local hometown friend in pursuing her dream in becoming a beauty pagent winner. She received Top 15 & won the Mrs. Congeniality Award.

December 2014- Expand the audience of the #BYODFAM through Instagram. I must lead by example by pushing myself daily and growing with my brand physically, mentally, and spiritually.

So as you guys can see it's been an exciting year for the brand. Also, exciting for myself as well. I'm anxious for what 2015 has in store. I have a few things planned so far. Most excited for BYOD to travel to my origins of Haiti to give back and learn more about my culture. Plan on documenting the trip so it will be a story to remember!

I wish everyone a Happy New Year! And hope you watch me grow in 2015. My words of wisdom to you is to be patient and continue to put in the work. Rome wasn't built in a day. I'm grinding and working on myself daily. I want you to do the same!

Merry Christmas to Everyone!

The Christmas season is upon us. The joy of giving is in the air. Aka swiping your credit card left and right Buying things we damn well know we cant afford lol. But, Christmas isn't about us, its about others. Being able to purchase gifts for others to see them smile is a great feeling. Not everybody has the funds to purchase gifts. You know the materialistic gifts. Doesn't mean you don't have something to give though....

We're all looking to further ourselves in life. To get to where we want to be....we must know how to get there. That's why asking questions and speaking to the older generation is very important. The older generation is filled with experience and advise that can benefit the up and coming generations. So while you are unwrapping your gifts this week make sure to thank who ever gave you the gift. And ask them a question that can benefit you and possibly push you a step closer to your goals or dreams. I'm not going to talk your ears off so want so wish you all a MERRY CHRISTMAS!

As far as the brand Be Your Own Dad I wanted to do a toy drive for this holiday season. This brand is all about giving back. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to this year so for Christmas 2015 that is a goal I want to accomplish for the brand. Like I mentioned earlier since I couldn't provide gifts I want to share some advice. Which is believe in yourself and any idea that you may have can be made into existence.

If you missed the December Inspirational Story of the month check it out below:
Don't forget:
Every inspirational story submitted to JVrules2000@beyourowndad.com will be reviewed by me. The story that moves me the most will be the winner for that month. As well the person that submitted the story will be awarded with a $20 dollar gift visa card. All you have to do is make a video no more than 90 seconds introducing who your are, where your from, and speak about a struggle you have or had and how you turned that negative into a positive. At the end of the video say the phrase "I am Be Your Own Dad". This way on one hand the viewers of the video can be motivated and on the other hand the person that submitted their story can be rewarded!!!

Self vs Everybody else

I'm gonna step away from the brand and speak what's on my mind real quick....

In the world that we live in today everybody is for self. Looking to better themselves and their personal group or family. Hey can't blame them. We all need food to eat. We all need a roof over our head. I want my children to have better opportunities then I've had. Much like the royal family. There name is carved in rock pretty much and every child that is conceived from that family branch is going to be set for life. Opportunities before they even say a word. It's crazy. But, one person in their family had the courage to do it for the generations to come.

So what about the family that doesn't have anything. Struggling to survive. Education is out the question because clean water isn't even promised everyday. What about them?

You know we have the power to help each other but we are so internally selfish that we don't want to use it. Like these blogs for example. Why not write a blog post about the path the CEO of a Fortune 500 company's took to get him/her to where they are. The CEO would share some ideas but not willingly to give up everything...why? Because they want to secure their families future. If you teach the student everything the teacher isn't needed anymore.....

Instead people use their blog posts to write about fashion, cars, the latest trend, all stupid shit that's not moving us forward as people. Why can't we focus on lending out a helping hand compared to the hottest Jordan out or the latest celebrity scandal. Hey I'm guilty im eye-ing the new Jordans coming out before Christmas. But, I would rather help the next family go from having dirty water to clean water before I have new sneakers that I will eventually stop wearing at some point in time.

In this current world everybody is waiting for the next big thing. Then take that and make "their" version of it and make money. Much like a parody when some event happens. You know...take the idea, put a spin on it, stamp your name on it, then reap the benefits.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is where is the originality at? Where is the "ima let that person create that and I'll go create my own thing". Then share it with people so they can create their own. But, we're all focused on self that we forget about everybody else.

Just my thoughts this week. Keep it real everybody.....O yeah my latest webisode is below. Please watch, comment, and share!!

Every life story submitted to JVrules2000@beyourowndad.com will be reviewed by me. The story that moves me the most will be the winner for that month. As well the person that submitted the story will receive a $20 dollar gift visa card. All you have to do is make a video no more than 90 seconds introducing who your are, where your from, and speak about a struggle you have or had and how you turned that negative into a positive. Creative Ideas

My most recent idea for the development of the brand came about from a question that's been haunting me the past month: how can I get inspirational stories? Besides the blog and webisodes the inspirational stories are going to move and motivate people. Because the truth in the stories are going to be a way to relate to the brand as well as the person sharing the story. In some ways the inspirational stories is the gas pedal for this car. I began strong in the summer by being able to find stories but as we end out 2014 my luck is running out. One thing that i've learned with developing a brand is you have to constantly be creative. Think of new ways and methods to create ideas and concepts. So I came up with the idea to start a contest.

At the end of the video say the phrase "I am Be Your Own Dad". This way on one hand the viewers of the video can be motivated and on the other hand the person that submitted their story can be rewarded. As I approach 2015 i'm trying to try new things to continue to spread the brand. I hope the contest will help that. I mean who doesn't like free money anyways.....

On a personal note things are looking up my way. I've been working and finally getting into my comfort zone over here on the west coast. I've been reading, practicing my craft, and lifting pretty much everyday. I beat myself if I don't do one of the three because I know there is someone out there working twice as hard. I only let myself down if I don't put in the work.

O Yeah the new J Cole Album 2014 Forrest Hills Drive dropped and I've been listening to that so much that my ears may bleed lol. But, seriously his album is another piece of motivation for me. He shares his experience of both sides of poverty and wealth. And he keeps it real. No overly hyped bars to confuse you. If you haven't heard the album yet you better stop what you doing and go check that out. You know it got leaked a week before so you already behind lol Until next time BYOD Fam!!

The secret of your Ego!

Opening up yourself to a cold world isn't easy. People like to use your negatives and struggles as self improvement tactics. Its like hearing another persons' problems make them feel better. Ain't that some shit! This world is so bad that people need to degrade others to make them feel better. But, this is BE YOUR OWN DAD and we're turning those negatives into positives. My latest read "The Power Of Now" by Eckhart Tolle has taught me the power of the ego. We all have a ego and we are constantly feeding it everyday. Whether its buying material things to impress others or making up stories to appeal as if there something better than they are.

If you let go of your ego you become bullet proof when it comes to negativity. For example, when your with your friends or people in general and someone tries to joke on you, let the joke go. Don't give a response to it. Don't laugh. Don't try coming back with another joke. Just let the joke pass by. If you don't show a response to it aka if you don't let your ego feel offended by it the joke has NO power! The ego is so powerful within us that we don't want to feel degraded. The ego has us so caught up that when someone tries to rash us we feel some certain way to defend our ego. We can't just let things slide. I'm telling you next time a person tries to joke on you just let it go.....watch how your attitude will be after. You will feel like you just found a $100 dollar bill.

In my latest webisode "J Vs. MR. BYOD" I try to share the side of two stories. J is a young brother caught up in the drug game. He doesn't have much hope for the future. MR. BYOD is another young brother who attempts to help spark a fire into J. He knows J is capable of great things because he has motivation to wake up early to serve his clients. We all need to encourage each and everyone to chase what they believe in. If we don't chase our dreams we can't change the world. Just think if Steve Jobs didn't chase his dream I wouldn't be able to type this blog.

Don't be controlled by others

Whats going on everybody! Another week into 2014 another blog post.....

First I want to congratulate Ashley Baptista on winning Top 15 & Miss Congeniality Awards this past weekend. She was a contestant in the Miss Mass USA beauty pageant and she held it down. My brand Be Your Own Dad was a proud sponsor and she did great. I just finished speaking with her and she said she's very happy how the weekend went and may be making another run for that top title in the future. And that's what I love to hear. This was her first competition and she took a few awards home. She's already thinking of her next step and that's what we all must do in life. We need to take our experiences from the past and continue on toward the future. She isn't giving up. She is growing and looking forward for whats next. Which is what we all must do! Her picture is posted below (Fellas keep your tongue inside your mouth lol)
The verdict for Mike Brown was read last night. Some of you may know I wrote a blog post when the incident occurred. If you want to read up on it click the link here: http://beyourowndad.blogspot.com/2014/08/rest-in-peace-to-our-future-leaders.html All I can say is......this isn't right. No need for me to get into specifics because we all know or have heard of the story. What I want to speak on is the reaction from Ferguson. Last night in Ferguson there was rioting, many people destroying police vehicles and destroying businesses. WHAT DOES THAT DO? Yes, I understand the verdict for the case is disgusting to hear about. This will go down in American History much like Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till. But, destroying the city isn't going to change the verdict. It doesn't bring justice to the situation. Destroying the city brings more pain. Brings more hatred within the city. Brings more negative attention to us as a culture.

You see we all are humans meaning we all have emotions. When it comes to anger we are controlled as if we are puppets. Someone says the wrong thing to you and you switch from normal to the Hulk. What i'm trying to get at is we must control our own emotions. Don't let others control how you feel and what you do. Negativeness is like water from a tsunami. Once it hits land its going to take everything over and move how it wants to move. Don't let negativity control you. I know its hard.....(trust me I know).....but we must THINK of our actions before we act. Just like our parents once told us. Don't let others control you, control your self.

I want to say Rest In Peace to Mike Brown. I did not know you but I was once a young black 18 yr old in this crazy world. Your life was cut short and its not fair. I pray for the citizens of Ferguson. I hope we all can move on from this and keep the belief that we all can unite as a nation one day.

If you knew better, you'd do better

So this past week it randomly hit me that I have been slacking hardcore. I touched on it for a second in my most recent webisode which can be seen below but I have been focusing on the wrong social media outlet. As you guys know I have the facebook and twitter. I post daily to both. I've always had instagram too but for some reason didn't think to focus on that outlet as much as the other two. When I think about the past year instagram has really changed the game. A picture is worth a thousands words like they say. But, IG connects to an audience in a different way plus many people use it for business. I know I can do the same in my own particular way.

Building a brand surely isn't easy and you learn many different things along the way. Momma dukes (mom) has been screaming in my ear all month "if you knew better, you'd do better" and this realization is a clear example. I will be much more active on Instagram. I'm also on vine; kind of a day in the life type idea because vine is fun. You have to have fun or you will be caught in the idea of chasing your dream as "work". It has to be a mixture of both.

On a personal note I finally landed a job. GOD IS GOOD! The job doesn't have to do with tv hosting but its a secured pay check at the end of the week. I can focus more NOW knowing I can pay rent and everything else. That's one thing I keep hearing about everyone that moves to California. They come out here chasing their entertainment dreams. They spend all their money on classes and going out partying. And, they forget that rent is due on the first. Not this guy! Have to keep my priorities straight and dream chase everyday. I won't keep talking your ear off i'll catch you guys next Tuesday. "POP HOLD IT DOWN" lol (social media joke)

My core audience are the realest!

Wassup BYOD Fam! I truly want to say Thank You for reading my blog posts. Its funny because when I first began the whole BYOD idea the "views" were out the roof. My very first few blog post were over a certain amount of views and I was feeling myself lol. Not gonna lie. But, as the weeks went by the views began to decrease and decrease. I asked myself why? Am I not spreading the word enough or is it a stupid idea.
I learned that every "new" thing has its "excitement" time. Something "new" is exciting to people.  Usually hear "I never heard of blah blah blah let me read up on him/her/it to find out what its about" Then after a week or two the him/her/it dies down and something new comes about. When the excitement dies down that is when the true work has to begin. You can't just give up because not as much people are listening or reading up on what you are doing. That's why when you first hear a person's music single the artist gets asked "where have you been" and the normal response is "I been doing this! You guys just didn't know" So once again i'm throwing a huge Thank You to everybody that reads my blog post because you all are my core audience right now. And TRUST ME i'm just getting started!!!

If you haven't seen the latest webisode then make sure to watch it right below! While studying for my criminal justice degree I was taught the phrase "Instant Gratification". When the spur of the moment out weighs the great potential. The idea was on my mind for a few days so I had to speak on it.

Before I let you guys go I want to shout out Ashley Baptista of Taunton, Ma. Ashley is a contestant in the Miss Massachusetts competition going down later on this month. BYOD is supporting her as a sponsor! Chase your dream girl!

Had two interviews today btw. Like I said in my previous post before this God has a plan for me. I'm off to class now so catch you guys next week!

Up Hill Battle

Whats going on everybody! Here another week. When I began the BYOD blog I had intended to focus it manly on the brand. I recently find myself making it more about myself. In a way I want the blog to serve as my blueprint to wherever I end up in life. So i'm sure you guys have already noticed but while reading these posts you find both personal as well as information related to the development of the brand.

This week I bring you the second webisode for the series that I began on my Youtube channel. I had a fun day filming as well as enjoying the environment. I didn't have a chance to speak to any hikers but I tried to give you guys an idea of what I will be doing in the video to come. I tried to make it fun as the same time. S/O to my momma! She joined me while recording. If you haven't already seen the video watch it above!

As for me i'm on the job hunt everyday. It's taking longer then expected but I have faith. I know God has a plan for me. I just have to continue to be productive everyday and good things will come. As we all should be. Don't ever think things aren't going to work out. Keep faith in God, always believe in yourself, and make yourself a better person than you were the day before. Until next time...Thanks for reading...Dueces!

P.S. If you haven't subscribed to the newsletter already make sure you do! You can receive everything in your email directly.

Two Guys Dream Chasing

Another Tuesday, another blog post. Don't have much to say (like I always say) but need to share the October Inspirational Story of the Month featuring Dell Best. Dell and I have known each other for a few years now. He first adventured over here to California at the beginning of 2013 pursuing his rap career. I first realized his rapping talent when we were about 17 or 18. Its a funny story, I had a 1996 Volkswagon Jetta and hosted a rap battle in my car. It was Dell versus another friend of mine that flows as well. Long story short Dell showed his versatile flow and I knew at that point that he can accomplish great things. He's come a long way and I'm excited for his career. He has already completed his album and has a music video out. We are both over here in California pursuing our dreams. Its assuring to know I have a hometown/state friend over here dream chasing with me. So...1. Please watch the interview I did for the month of October feat. Dell Best

And 2. Visit his website http://a40ent.com/ and check his album out "The Best View". You can purchase a hard copy or get the digital download through Itunes. We all have to support each other.

Lastly, I want to begin creating weekly webisodes which I will post on my Youtube channel. But, I'm just not sure of what topics to speak on. The webisodes are a way to connect with my audience (like you reading this right now) and at the same time read the feedback from everyone. Plus, I can make it real fun. So if you have ANY IDEAS (ANY!!!!!!!!!!! that can relate to BYOD or the message I'm giving) please comment so I can get this ball rolling.

BTW the idea I had in my previous post about traveling to Haiti and creating a documentary is looking like its a green light. Not going to rush it but I hope I can accomplish this goal in 2015.

Idea of a lifetime!

Wassup Wasssup Wasuup! So listen to this.....

I just came back from my hosting classes and got hit like a ton of bricks with a idea. I'm so excited that I had to sit down and tell you guys. So I have my brand beyourowndad and it has been a rollercoaster ride I tell you. The great thing I love about my brand is I can do what I want with it. For example, today I finished filming the October inspirational story featuring Boston's own Dell Best. I'll be editing the footage and getting that to you guys as soon as possible.
My ultimate mission for the brand is inspire and motivate. I've been blessed with the greatest chance in the world because I am my mother's son. Boy! I wish I could share with you her life story because it's amazing what she has done and accomplished. She has came straight from Haiti and made it in America! In due time i'll share her story. It's not time yet.

But, to get back on topic of my idea!!! I asked myself how can I inspire and motivate? How about traveling to Haiti and making a positive effect on the young children of Haiti! If I can get in contact with a teacher in Haiti and be able to work out some way to teach his class for a certain period of time (maybe a week or so) I know I can make a change.  I know, I know your thinking wow slow down Jimmy are you thinking straight? Let me tell you something......like I previously said in my most recent blog post I just finished reading the book "The Alchemist". And what I took from the book is we all have a life journey. Our life journey is our calling. The book i'm reading now "The Secret" shares that once you find your calling the universe will move out your way and the law of attraction comes into effect. You begin to attract people and events start to happen to reach your calling. This isn't just random. You ever find yourself in a better situation because you thought you made a mistake but it worked out in the end? That's the universe working things out for you.

So to get to my point I ran into my crib and shared with my mother my idea. She loves it and shared with me that fact that she had a random thought earlier to give her friend in Haiti a call. The "ironic" part or the universe talking to me is that her friend has connections with teachers in Haiti!!!! Now what are the chances that I get struck with this amazing idea and she happens to know somebody that can make it happen? BeYourOwnDad traveling to Haiti to film a documentary of my mother returning to her home land and as a team we help better children of the third world country Haiti....How does that sound? I would love feedback!

Knowledge Is Key

"Knowledge is Key" has been my new phrase lately. If you follow me on social networks such as twitter and snapchat you know I have repeatedly said the phrase over and over. I recently read the book "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho and all I can say is "WOW"! You ever get that feeling that you missed out on something good? Well that's how I felt after finishing the book. I don't want to ruin the book for those who haven't read it but I strongly suggest going out and picking it up. I enjoyed it so much I passed it on to a friend so he can learn from the book as well.

Now I know the people who have never opened up a book are saying "Read a book? What a nerd! You remember back in grade school when the teacher would constantly choose you or pick you first because you always knew the answer to a question. The "bullies" of the class would laugh and label you a teacher's pet or something like that. From that point on you don't like being made fun of so you choose not to answer questions in class. Let's examine that situation for a second shall we: (takes out magnifying glass) we would get teased because we knew the answer to a question. In other words because we succeeded in studying at that time and others were jealous of that so they chose to "hate". Ultimately, you second guess YOUR participation because of others. As children and teens we developed a mind set of acting a certain way to not get judged or labeled. What we need to do as we get older and "MATURE!" is undo those thoughts and actions. We were all born in our unique way to succeed. What happens is "friends", "teachers" and even adult figures tell us what we are doing is wrong so we change our actions because of them.

Easiest way to explain this is you just got out the shower. You're as clean as a baby's bum. You begin to progress in some way but your "friends" say you study too much or practice too much. There throwing dirt onto you! Now you continue in life with this dirt on you so you don't study or practice as much as before. Only hurting yourself in the long run because of what someone told you. What we all MUST do is shower ourselves of all the dirt we have ever been told and trust our instincts. Only do what your insides tell you. Don't do what others tell you because others don't always have your best interest....Feel me?

I'm gonna leave you guys with this: I think we can all agree the team that scores the most points in a game is the winner correct? OK how about the person with 1,000,000 dollars in their bank account is more rich money wise than the person with only 100 dollars correct? OK so why not choose to increase your knowledge by reading a book if we all know the more you have of something the greater chance your "winning"? Am I making sense or just typing for no reason........

I'm now reading "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne......Knowledge is Key everyone

Positivety brings progress!

Change is constant and apart of life. We all have to approach change with a positive mindset. Just like starting off the week. If you wake up Monday morning already complaining then you will have a horrible start of the week. Ask yourself when was the last time you went to a party or club and told yourself you were gonna have a good time? I bet you had a ball! Now think of the same scenario and difference is you told yourself you "couldn't" have a good time because you were in a bad mood or whatever. You were probably in the corner all night mean muggin everybody.

What I'm trying to get at is we need to approach life with the same idea about having a good time at a party. If we tell ourselves we will then it's going to happen. Everyday is a opportunity! Rain, shine, or snow each day brings it's own lesson. We need to capitalize on that day. What I'm about to say is much easier to say then do but leave the past in the past! We can't change what happen yesterday so why stress about it today? It just ruins your day and now you wasted a day because of what happened yesterday or the day before. Once you get that down packed and apply it to your life you will be happier. I'm telling you.

Life in Cali is good so far. Had my first hosting class last week and it was cool. Instructor told me based on my performance I may had gotten the gig if I was at an audition. Keyword is MAY! Which means I was almost there but not fully. So I just have to practice everyday and master the craft. They say practice makes perfect....I say practice makes progression. I have class tomorrow night so I will see what's in store for me.

Yesterday something told me to make a video and I did. Please watch the whole video and share with anybody that you know

What up from the west coast!

Whats up from the west coast!! Before I get into things I just wanna say Thank You to everyone that has supported me this far. From the beginning of creating Be Your Own Dad to my transition to the west coast I really appreciate everyone that has simply read one of my blog post or liked one of my Facebook memes i post daily. Support is honestly the hardest thing to come by because people will look at your idea once and write it off as not worth their time. I'm guilty of doing the same thing because I would listen to a artist for the first time and hit next before the minute mark. Crazy thing is a month later I would be jamming to another one of their songs. So, give people a chance to hear their idea, music, or anything that they decide to share because sharing your thoughts is a tough pill to swallow.

OK so I'm on the west coast ladies and gents. It is hot out here!! I step out in the morning and almost break a sweat getting to the car lol. I think I have jet lag because I'm tired by 10! But, its all good. Gonna take some time to get use to the three hour time difference. I knew I had to write this post today and I told myself I would do it at 9 p.m. But, it slipped my mind that it will be 12 on the east coast and that is pretty late for a post. So forgive me I will get a hold of the time difference sooner or later.

I don't want to go on about useless information but I do want to share this. I did research on a few different successful people and I found out a few common things. Obviously if I want to be successful I want to mimic what successful people do right.....so I decided to take one common activity that they all do. SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE USE ALL 24 HOURS OF THE DAY TO THEIR ADVANTAGE. They are constantly being productive. Whether its being productive for their career or self they are constantly doing something to move forward! So I have decided to challenge myself and hope others will do the same. For my first year I am going to try to sleep less and be awake more. According to Google (every college students best friend) we sleep away 1/3 of our life! How did they figure that out? Well sleep 8 hours a day...there's 24 hours in a day....I'm hoping you figured it out by now lol if not pick up a math book or something! So I am not allowing myself to sleep in anymore. No more waking up and half the day is over. I'm waking up when the sun is rising and not gonna stop moving until the sun sets. I challenge you! yes you that is reading this to join with me. If I can do it you can do it. We all need to live life more and not let life past us by....feel me?

I need to lead by example and embody what Be Your Own Dad really means.....its not just a brand anymore its a lifestyle. If anyone sees me slacking please tell me! I don't want to get too comfortable with who I currently am because that means I'm not growing as a individual. I have my first tv hosting class tomorrow at 7 so wish a brother luck!

Beginning my journey!

I know I missed my Tuesday weekly post please forgive me!

Opening a door without knowing what's behind it is the only way I can describe my emotions at the moment. I'm waiting for my flight in the airport right now and i'm nervous but excited at the same time.  I'm leaving the nest of Massachusetts to the wild of California. Throw me in the jungle and I'll walk out with a chinchilla and 20 pounds heavier from eating the animals lol I'm ready tho! Straight face, confident walk, hip hop jamming in my headphones, and I'm preparing myself for the struggles to come. Every successful person said they experienced the bad before the good. So I'm preparing myself.

I don't want to be the average soul that says there chasing their dream. I am dream chasing but difference between me and them is I'm following my plan. Do I have my whole plan figured out? No! No! No! But, I know my first step is this move. Take it one step at a time and my plan will unravel itself.

I've always wanted to help others and Be Your Own Dad gives me that opportunity. And after thinking and doing research I've decided that my ultimate goal for BYOD is to become a non profit organization. I can positivity effect communities on a professional basis. It's a big goal but I just need to chip away at it slowly. Based on the research that I've done I have a lot of work to do but I know it will be worth it in the end.

I know God has a plan for me because he's blessed me with so much in life thus far. Just have to continue listening to my heart and see how this all plays out....

S/O to all those in Massachusetts I'll miss everyone. Hope I make you guys proud. Please follow along on my journey every step of the way. If i make it we all make it!

Embrace the Struggle

Struggle and Success pretty much go hand in hand. Much like lifting weights. There is a moment during your workout when your in pain and you think you can't go on. You want to just get one more rep but your body is struggling. Your at 9 but can't make it to 10. Feeling as if your at defeat. Then the pain comes. Your sore and dragging your arms and legs because the workout took a tole on you. The day after is always killer!!! Time to rest up.

Now the next workout day comes for that body part you were working on. Same work out, same work being put in, and same sweat dropping off your body. You just got nine reps and your going for the tenth. You go for it and it doesn't come easy but the tenth rep is done. Look at that! One day you come up short and the next time you succeed at it. Without the struggling the first time getting the tenth rep wouldn't feel as good. The struggle makes you stronger.

This months inspirational story is a great example of how struggle motivated a young female to do better. After dealing with drug issues within her family she chose to not become a steareotype and pursue her education. I feel honored because she decided to return to school this fall after viewing my website. And that's what BYOD is all about. Pushing people to better themselves when they feel like they can't. Listen to her story here: http://youtu.be/xDpt6LvU6GQ

Please step out your comfort zone to share your story. You never know who can relate to you. You can change a life without knowing it.

Increase positive feedback! Decrease the negative.

My goal for this blog is to educate, share, and bring everybody on this journey with me of building a brand. I tend to share my personal life and update everybody with the steps as I'm taking them. Back in June 2009, when I addressed my graduation class I said we need to give back to our community. I always stand by the saying "Don't talk about it, be about it." I can't stand a person that talks about what there gonna do and NEVER do it! Be a man/woman of your word and back up your statements. So far I haven't changed my community the way I would like too but I'm trying to back up what I said as much as I can.

BYOD sponsors and supports the T+T Mens Basketball League which will be held every summer. Last night I learned a former Taunton High graduate is raising money to go to a upcoming pageant. I just knew BYOD has to support and giveback. After donating to her cause the brand now sponsors and supports the local Taunton native Ashley Baptista. This upcoming November she will competing for the Massachusetts representative position in the Miss USA competition. One thing we all must do is support and encourage everybody in their dreams. It takes a lot of guts to share with everybody your dream and what you envision yourself doing. The responses are both negative and positive but most the time negative. When people can't do something they share that negativeness and it becomes contagious. We need to do the exact opposite and support one another.

Be Your Own Dad supports Ashley Baptista in her upcoming journey and wishes her the best of luck.

I'M JUMPING!!!!!!

Patience is a virtue. I've been sitting here for about an hour staring at my computer screen. Looking at videos on worldstar and youtube. I came across a video in which Young Jeezy donated one million dollars to a real estate program. At first I simply clicked on the video to see what Young Jeezy is up to now. But, I came across a fellow leader JayMrRealEstate. This brother is getting it done in the real estate game but what I'm intrigued by is the way he is giving back to his community. He has established a course where he mentors and teacher people how to be successful in the real estate game. Guess what!?! Thanks to Young Jeezy he is now giving out a free month of schooling. http://jeezyscholarship.com/ So now tell me!! Please tell me! You guys don't know how excited i'm getting because I know there isn't one. But, tell me!!! what excuse you have to not join up for his classes? What i'm getting at is Jay invested in his brand and now has support from those that want to help. Now he can provide his community with free schooling for a month thanks to Jeezy.

After watching that video I received a text message. Received a youtube link so I went and opened it up. MY MAN ET!!!!!!!!! If you don't know who Eric Thomas is then your missing out. You will see his videos on the facebook page trust me. ET just got me ampd! He just gave me a redbull it feels like. He explained in this particular video on how to perfect the present. Worry about today! The past is gone. You only have 24 hours in a day. Use all 24 hours. Its amazing when your thoughts are stolen out of your head without speaking them. You ever listen to a song and you love that song from that point on because your thoughts were the song lyrics? Its crazy right? That's what ET just did to me.

Next and last video I watched was of Steve Harvey. I posted this on the facebook page recently. And he was talking about the secret to success. He simply said "you have to jump". I had to rewind the video the first time I watched it. He said when you jump you have to take a leap of faith. Its scary because you don't know when your parachute will open when you jump but, if you grind it out it will eventually open. On the flip side if you do not jump your parachute will never open!

With that said I am ready to jump. I've recently made the decision to move to California and make this dream a reality. Honestly i'm afraid that I am going to go out there and fail. I'm a man with pride I don't want anyone to know I lost at something. Its funny because i've been thinking how I am going to share this with everybody and my mind was blank all day. After watching the three videos I just mentioned about i'm more than confident that this is the right move. People are gonna doubt me. Tell me im crazy. Simply not believe in me. Its okay because at the beginning nobody believes in you! I have to earn that belief.

I recently got an email letting me know I have the opportunity to be a Correctional Officer. I can make 45k a year. Just wait for the interview......Is 45k a year worth my brand? The real question I asked myself is why am I waiting on them to give me an opportunity. They will take up all my time! Why let them by my boss when I can be my own boss? I shared with some friends how i'm going to pass up on the CO position and  i'm gonna believe in my brand. They said "the CO can be ya back up plan. Grind it out for a year then move". PEOPLE NEED BACK UP PLANS WHEN THEY PLAN ON FAILING! The passion and motivation I have in this brand is as long as the nile river and back! There is no time for failure. There is no time like the present! Only you can go out and get it done. Just have to go.....PERIOD! Cali at the end of the month.....Dueces!

I have yet to go to the store and say can I have xy + 2 and give me my y change back!

I am a child of Hip Hop. Being born in 1991 I have been a witness of the transition of the Hip Hop culture. One thing that hasn't changed in Hip Hop is the story telling aspect. Whats amazing is the different ways artists have been able to get their story across. What often gets misunderstood about Hip Hop is the "vibe" that artists give off when they write their rhyme or song. Artists use a wide vocabulary of words expressing their thoughts and feelings. Often times the harsh negative words stick out more than the positive words. And the non day to day listener will make their judgement of Hip Hop based off what they have listened to once. I've had experiences where I got judged negatively because I would be listening to a Hip Hop song with explicit language. An artist such as Tupac Shakur is judged once based off his negative antics or his lyrics unfortunately. But, in my opinion Tupac Shakur is one of the most influential beings that once lived on this earth. I feel that he should be remembered and spoke of like other great influential people like Aristotle or Plato.

When Tupac was 17 he was interviewed on many different topics. One topic he spoke about was education. As he spoke I was reassured that this man was a leader amongst followers. In this interview he shares that "school is really important: Reading, writing, arithmetic. But what they tend to do is teach you reading, writing, arithmetic…then teach you reading, writing, arithmetic again." He continues to say "there should be a class on religious cults, there should be a class on police brutality, there should be a class on apartheid, there should be a class on racism in America, there should be a class on why people are hungry, but…their class is on…gym….You know?" Tupac spoke from the heart and said what was afraid to be said. He makes complete sense! Why re-teach a subject over and over and over when that subject isn't going to get you through your day to day life. I have to steal a line from Tupac real quick. He said "I have yet to go to the store and say can I have xy + 2 and give me my y change back" PREACH MY BROTHER PREACH!! Its great to know algebra and geometry but when am I going to use that to get me through to tomorrow?!? Now who is going to teach us the real lessons of life?

If you want to see change you have to start with yourself. My newest segment for the Be Your Own Dad brand is called (Man)ners. (You see what I did there lol) The segment (Man)ners is going to teach important day to day life lessons that we all should know. I decided to roll with what Tupac said about learning different subjects and taken it upon myself to educate others. I don't have all the answers but I am willing to share everything that has helped me get me to where I am thus far. I wasn't fortunate to have a father to teach me the different life lessons but I have had others pass on their experiences to me. And I have decided to do the same. I will cover a wide variety of topics and will be taking suggestions down the road as well. Here is the first episode for my segment (Man)ners which covers how to prepare for a job interview:
"They got money for wars, but can't feed the poor. Say there ain't no hope for the youth and the truth is
it ain't no hope for tha future"-Tupac

A true leader is the first person to set the example for how something is done or achieved

Just like that summer 2014 is coming to an end. As I type this I am sitting back and reflecting. In May 2014 I was busy working two full time jobs. I was working close to 90 hours a week and walking around like a zombie because I was so tired. While selling cars I would watch the owner of the dealership travel to each different dealership that he owned. I viewed as he was making sure everything was running as they should be. And it dawned on me that I'm apart of his dream. There is a quote that I will never forget and it goes like this: "start working on your dreams or someone will put you to work for theirs." As I stood there watching him pursue his dream I told myself change is coming. I don't know what or how but I have to make a change. I told myself summer of 2014 is going to be life changing.

Let's fast forward to the present. I have a whole different outlook for the word success. Success can't be measured by the number of digits on your check at the end of the week. My opinion of success is an internal level in which you feel you have reached and exceeded by overcoming your own expectations. So far I've been able to start my own brand: Be Your Own Dad. I have my own website! I have something that I can call mine. I can now share stories of individuals overcoming their life struggles. I can make a difference in my community as well as peoples' lives. I've had the pleasure of sponsoring the T+T Ballers Only basketball league in my own city.

If you haven't already please read my previous post concerning the sponsorship published 6/17/14 : First Sponsor

I sat down and had a chat with my good friend Apollos Wade (creator of the T+T Ballers Only League) in June 2014 and we asked each other "what's one goal we want to accomplish this summer concerning the league?" We came to the conclusion that we want the league to bring change. Our city doesn't have many activities going on during the summertime so we have to change that. The championship game for the league was this past Sunday. (Congratulations to the black team btw) Did we bring change you may be asking? Well we were featured in our city's newspaper! Check out below!

Please click here to view the article: http://www.tauntongazette.com/article/20140821/SPORTS/140828727/11172/SPORTS/?Start=1

The Be Your Own Dad brand focuses on overcoming life struggles and stresses the importance of goal setting. Just like Apollo and I did back in June we figured out what we wanted to accomplish and two months later we were successful. A leader is not one that commands his army/business from a seat or office. A true leader is the first person to set the example for how something is done or achieved.  Ultimately, resulting in their supporters following the lead set forth. As we close up the final days of August I am very excited for what has been accomplished with the brand and I am looking forward to what is to come.

Rest in Peace to our future leaders (response to recent killing inFerguson, Missouri)

In this day and age I fear for the youth.  What's currently going on in Ferguson, Missouri brings pain to my heart. The young brotha was 18! EIGHTEEN YEARS old! Life was just beginning for Michael Brown. I remember at 18 during the summer time I was just like Michael Brown chillin with my boy. Kicking it (hanging out) as much as I could because we were leaving off to college come the fall time. Thinking I'm 18! Im grown now! But in reality still so young.

The events that have gone down this past week are tragic. Let's forget the fact that he was black for a second. A young man at the age of 18 was gunned down for no reason. Black/white/yellow it doesn't matter! We are killing our youth. We are putting fear in the upcoming generation. When I say "we" I'm referring to society btw. I have a nephew and he is 17. According to society he can't walk down the street now without getting harassed by a cop. He can't wear a hoodie on top of that because I guess that's the "I'm a criminal" outfit. This some bullsh*t. When is it gonna stop?

Then the police have the audacity to release a video of Michael prior to the incident trying to "justify" the officers actions. No!! boys in blue you guys aren't slick. I see right through you! There's a coin with 2 sides here. Side A: Michael committed a crime prior to the shooting and the officer was sent to investigate. Even if that was the truth (which we know is not) that doesn't give a officer a green light to pull out his gun and start shooting at a unarmed suspect.  They say "if the officer feels threatened he can draw his weapon"...if you pull up next to somebody attempting to grab them aka starting problems how threatened are you? Sounds like a bully in my book. He probably was trying to make his arrests quoto at last minute for all we know. Let's look at Side B: There was no prior crime committed. Michael and his boy were walking down the street. Once again there is no valid reason to approach these young men or pull out your weapon.

"Freeze! put your hands up! Hands up now!" I think we all have heard a police officer say that command at some point. Whether we heard it first hand or in a movie we know police utter those exact words. Young Michael knew that too because he put his hands up. Reports even say Michael started to get down on his own. Arms raised in the air is a non aggressive stance. Police command us to put our hands up so 1. To show we are complying with their instructions and 2. To show no weapons are available or drawn. So why would you shoot a person multiple times with their hands up?!? I think ill find Waldo before I get the answer to that question.

This post is to help recognize we are killing our future leaders of this world. I'm talking about future role models, future politicians, future athletes, future cure to cancer/ future civil rights leader, future Barack Obama, future Thomas Edison. I can go on for days. The mind is the most powerful weapon on this planet and we are leaving an individual with a badge to make the decision whether a person is going to reach their potential. This isn't a black or white thing....it's a right or wrong thing.
Prayers go out to the city of Ferguson.

Rest in Peace Michael Brown
Rest in Peace Trayvon Martin

What is the meaning of Family?

I'm hurt everybody. I'm in a real negative space right now. I just received a text from my "brother" to wish my "father" a happy birthday. I put both words in quotes because I don't understand the meaning of those words.

Now let me just say I hate when people blast their information on social media sites and at the end say "don't hit me up" or "leave me alone". THEN WHY DID YOU PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE! Today's post isn't for attention or to get a response for anyone saying everything will be alright blah blah blah. I ain't with all that. I'm just spitting the truth right now. I'm a closed person but I need y'all to feel me right now.

The past 24 hours of my life have been real crazy. I witnessed one of my family members kick other family members out when they have no where to go. I'm stuck being the middle man trying to figure this out. I have two older brothers that I don't even know. They say blood is thicker then water but my shit is looking real anemic right about now.

One brother I'm cool with I can't front. But, I'm closer to his best friend then I am to him. "I'm my brothers keeper" is some bulllshit. (Idk random thought) Excuse my language by the way. I tend not to curse but if the shoe fits I'm wearing it. I have another brother that I don't even know. We lived together up to my college years but besides looks I don't know one thing about him. Everybody from my hometown will probably get a kick out of this because they know exactly who I'm talking about. Nobody on the outside never understood why we didn't get along. But, much like Jesus said " if you deny me in front of men I will deny you in front of my father" there is no love to be found or lost. "That's not my brother"......"I don't know that nigga"...just a few words I heard when I'm referred to by this particular "brother". Do I feel some type of way....I would be lying if I said no but if you ain't with me then your against me. Plain and simple. And he gonna text me telling me to say happy birthday to a father that didn't play his part...what!

The females in my life is another story. I have a mother that gets the impossible done. I have a sister that legit turned her negatives into positives but always seam to get the short side of the stick. But, these two can't get along. It's so bad that holiday gatherings aren't even a option. I swear if they got along it would be the equivalent of Shaq and Kobe, Jordan and Pippen aka get shit done and make things happen.

It's funny because my sister is from my fathers side. So technically she is my family but not my mothers. But, family isn't about blood. When you love and support one another that's family. When you invest your time and love and receive the same back that's family. I tried to dig deeper to find the root of the problem between my mother and sister but I was told there isn't a issue. Somebody is lying to themselves. I can't force a mute person to talk and I can't make the blind see.

So now what? Being the creator of Be Your Own Dad I need to turn this negative situation into a positive one. I'll let you guys know if I ever do....I'm out.
