Lesson 1: Tie a Tie the BYOD Way! (BTS footage)

Growing up I realized I didn't have anyone take the time to teach me how to tie a tie. It wasn't until one day before school I found myself staring into the mirror trying to figure out on my own. I had to use google and figure it out. So, since BYOD is all about educating the viewers the concept for this video was how to tie a tie.
1. Cross Large end over small end
2. Then Go Behind
3. Cross in Front Again
4. Over the Top
5. Through the loop

Of course, my group and I are comedians on the low so we had to put our spin on it. Who said you can't make learning fun? Check it out below and share it with a family member! Also, some behind the scenes shots!

A Question Of Grace

Tonight was opening night for the stage play "Question of Grace" where I play the character "Dion". It was a great first night. The audience had nothing but good things to say to the cast and I. My character is pretty much a criminal on the run. He stuck up a strip club and has been on the run ever since. Someone that wasn't supposed to be at the club in the first place witnesses the crime. The character then has to decide whether to tell the police of the crime or to stay quiet to protect his name.

It's been a great start to our 3 day performance and i'm looking forward to Day 2.

It's not that people are afraid of failing...

I recently read that it's not that people are afraid of failing. People are afraid of failing in front of their "friends". It's like others opinions of them matter so much it will stop you from doing what you want to do. DON'T BE THAT PERSON! I rather fail over and over just to say that I gave it a try. It's like asking that girl for her number. Instead of holding that feeling of regret that you should have tried just go ahead and do it.

I've been busy this week

Wassup #BYODFAM, it's been a busy week for me. I'm happy about it though. I hate having free time on my hands when I know I can be productive. I'm at work right now and it's 2:18 in the morning. I'm thinking of ways to continue building BYOD.

I've been doing a lot of filming this week. Which is great. I've built a mini production studio in my room. My group of actors and actresses are back at it and  we've been getting a lot done.

Today we released part 1 of our new skit "Cuffin Season Training: 101". Tomorrow we are releasing the full version. Also, we finished editing a new BYOD WAY episode called "How to Tie a Tie". So, be on the lookout for that soon.

On a side note I want to mention it's never too late to dream chase. Doesn't matter how old you are. Yeah, I'm only 25 saying this but I'll be damned when I turn 90 and I have regrets of chasing a dream. We only have one life. Make it worth living. But, don't just dream....PUT IN THE WORK THAT COMES ALONG WOTH IT. That's it....dueces✌🏾️

Birth of a Nation Review

A body of water is calm and restless until an object is thrown into it. The object will cause motions within the water that may result in ripples, waves, tsunamis, etc. The body of water will never be the same again because of the effect the object made. On the surface of the water things may seam calm but underneath changes are happening. Nat Turner is the object that was thrown into the slavery pool that changed the future for many generations to come.

"Birth of a Nation" directed and produced by Nate Parker is a film that should never be forgotten. The true story of a slave that became a preacher known as Nat Turner has made a great impact on my life this past weekend. This film sent me on a roller coaster of emotions. In the theatres, I went from wanting to yell at the screen to cheering in a matter of seconds.

To further understand my correlation of Nat Turner as an object thrown into a body of water you must understand the history of slavery. Slaves were individuals whose God given rights were stripped and taken away from them. For 100+ years the "Nigger" wasn't any more than help for the white man. Still hard to believe the skin color of an individual became the determination factor of what life will be. Slaves weren't allowed to read, write, or participate in any type of learning. In this film Nat Turner was one of the few slaves that learned to read. He was only allowed to read the Bible which led him into being a preacher. After learning the truth of the word he realized that slavey was wrong. Slave masters would quote scripture that supported slavery but Nat learned there was other scriptures that did the same to objectify it. Nat Turner led the first slavery rebellion that lasted 48 hours.

Now, I'm not a Hollywood film reviewer. Based on the reviews so far that I've read this film hasn't been received so well. Nat Turner took a stand for what he believed in and that is why I enjoyed this movie. Nat Turner had the courage to face his oppressors and fight. Nat ultimately was murdered for his rebellion but his act was the first ripple that was needed in the slavery pool. And, 400+ years later slavery became abolished. In the movie, Nat Turner played by producer Nate Parker mentions "losing battles to win the war." Even though we are at a very weird time in history in 2016 I believe as a people we wouldn't be where we are if it wasn't for historical greats such as Martin Luther King, Harriet Tubman, and Nat Turner. These leaders lost their lives in their personal battles but helped us as a people gain the prize of freedom!

Despite the recent news of the film "flopping" and the negative press on Producer Nate Parker I suggest everyone to go out and support "Birth Of a Nation".

I did stand up tongiht and maaaaaaaan lemme tell you....

#BYODFAM I HAVE TO TELL YOU WHAT HAPPENED TONIGHT!

Alright, so my man Steve Brown had a stand up show tonight. I had to go show love and support of course. The show was at Park Place in Burbank. Some bar that was hosting a softballs teams retirement (I thought it was) or end of the season game. Steve mentioned earlier in the day that I could possibly get some stand up time if I go. So, of course I said why not....

We get there and o man!!! Lmao let's just say we were 2/3 black people there lol matter of fact the other black person there was performing his routine as we stepped in. The crowd in this bar was 45+ old middle aged white man. If you don't know I've been dibbling and dabbling in stand up lately. Prior to tonight I performed stand up twice. So when I heard another opportunity I told myself "you better take advantage".

Like I said as we stepped into the bar and a brother was performing. He was from NY. As a viewer shit was awkward!!!!!! He said "I can tell Black Lives Matter here" and it was crickettts!!!!! Lmao. To make a long story short Steve goes up one comic after the brother, and he even struggled some. But, out of all the comics tonight he held his own and did the best. Steves been doing this for four years now so I expect that. It wasn't that jokes weren't hitting. It was the crowd just wasn't our audience. Half of them were drinking, playing pool, making noise, watching tv, and the other half were watching us not laughing lmao. But, as a comic you have to adapt and run the show.

I performed after Steve and boy was I struggling. I didn't do as good as I thought but at the same time I didn't do as bad either. My jokes weren't landing. I started rambling. I'm proud of myself because I only studdered 1-2 times on stage which is great for live event practice. But, I got a few laughs from the older white guys that wouldn't mind me dating their daughters lmao

So moral of the story for this post is take advantage of opportunities and try your hardest. You may succeed or you may fail. I clearly failed, but this experience was a great lesson that I can now learn from. Now, I know to not make a Biggie reference to an audience of older white men lmao.

Fourth Quarter Thinking

Wassup BYODFAM! We're In the fourth quarter of the year. This is the final bout. The last three months of the year to finish off strong. So this is what you need to do:

-Either finish or forget about everything you didnt complete up to this point. You have a new slate on your hands.

-Create a goal that you can accomplish within these last few months. It can be a professional or personal goal. The holidays are around the corner so it can be a financial goal as well. 

-With these last 12 weeks you can strategize what actions you will perform each week that will help you progress toward that goal. So 12 weeks left = 12 steps = 1 step per week

-Every Sunday begin whatever action that is that will progress you to step 2 and further on

-On Saturday review your actions that week and MAKE sure you did what you said you would do. Hold yourself responsibility.

At the end of these 12 weeks you should have completed your goal and getting ready to celebrate the New Year. Carry the energy and momentum of completing your goal into 2017 and start off the year ahead of the game!

Go out and get it!
