Black History Month Inventor of the Day: Madam C.J. Walker

Hey #BYODFAM! Being that we are in the middle of Black History Month I wanted to do something special. There are many great black inventors that haven't received enough credit for their inventions in my opinion. I always like to educate my readers in someway. Therefore, I will be honoring black inventors on my blog for the remainder of the month.

Black History Month Inventor of the day: Madam C.J. Walker
Madam C.J. Walker
Madam C.J. Walker was born on December 23rd, 1867 and was raised by her parents Owen and Minerva Breedlove who were originally slaves. That's right, Madam C.J. Walker was born into a former-slaved family. Walker's parents worked on a Parish Farm owned by Robert W. Burney. In the 1800s there was hardly any electricity or enough water available meaning Madam could not wash her hair as often as she would like. As the days rolled by her hair began to fall out and her scalp became very dry. Until one day she made her own hair lotion with sulfur, perfume, and petroleum which made her hair grow back tremendously by healing her scalp. Once she began selling her hair lotion for $.14 cents a bottle everyone wanted to purchase it. Madam began to travel around the western and northern parts of America to sell her product.

Madam used her proceeds to create change and get involved with the NAACP. All Madam wanted to do was make a change in the world and with that she provided scholarships and funded campaigns. The beauty market is worth 64 million dollars and Madam C.J. Walker was the first person who began it with her hair growing lotion.
