After
a strange win against the 49ers from the week before, the Patriots hit
the road this past Sunday to take on the New York Jets in the Meadowlands. This is the first meeting this season between the two
longtime rivals, and Bill Belichick and the Gang looked to beat down the
struggling Jets. That wasn’t the case though as it was a tough grind it
out type of game with Tom Brady having to remind us again of why he is the
GOAT.
The
Jets struck gold first with a field goal at the end of the first drive of
the game making it 3-0 NYJ lead early. The Patriots tried to trick the Jets
defense with a toss to Legarrette Blount running to the right side,
but he cutback and reversed to open field to the left side with an unlikely
lead blocker ahead of him in Tom Brady, who was looking to decleat
someone with the play resulting in a first down. (Brady blocked nobody)
Blount finished the game with 11 carries for 67 yards. Rob Gronkowski
injured his back just plays later as Brady tried to air it out downfield,
but the result of the play left Gronk in route to the locker room with
no return later in the game. (happens every season, he’ll be back).
The
Patriots went scoreless on the drive and the Jets took advantage by
going deep downfield to the young boy Quincy Enunwa who had a great game
ending with 5 receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown. The Jets
made their way to the goal line with Fitzpatrick linking up with Brandon
Marshall on a jump ball over DB Malcolm Butler for 6 points. Marshall
finished the game with 6 catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. Down 10-0
early in the 2nd quarter, Bill Belichick decided to jump in his bag and
execute a wide receiver screen/pass with Chris Hogan throwing deep to
Malcolm Mitchell which resulted in defensive pass interference putting
the patriots in position to get on the board with 3. On the Jets next
drive, Patriots #21 Malcolm Butler created a momentum turnover with a
swipe at the football on a Jets wideout, causing him to cough up the
ball giving it back to NE.
The Patriots took advantage driving down the field and scored on a out of the ordinary play with Brady dropping the snap from shotgun, picking the ball up and blessing rookie Malcolm Mitchell in the back of the end zone for 6. The rookie from Georgia had a career day finishing with 5 receptions for 42 yards and 2 touchdowns. With the score tied, the Patriots blocked Jets kicker Nick Folk’s field goal attempt at the end of the 2nd. The Patriots with some time to score before the half couldn’t capitalize with Gostkowski missing his 4th field goal of the season.

With the scored tied at half, NE came out and
put 3 up going ahead 13-10 with a Gostkowski field goal. The Jets
answered with 6 with Fitzpatrick throwing a deep pass to the end zone for
Enunwa and reclaiming the lead 17-13. Fitzpatrick’s stat line for the
game was 22-32 for 269 yards and 2 touchdowns. NE came up with 3 on the
next drive with Brady leading the offense down the field into field goal
range and Gostkowski executing his kick making the score 17-16 NYJ.
With 4 minutes to go in the game, Mr. Calm & Cool Tom Brady does what he always does
and lead the goons down the field and threw another TD to the rookie
Mitchell at the left pylon silencing 82,000 in Metlife stadium.
With a
failed attempt on the 2 point conversion the score stood as 22-17 NE
leaving the Jets trying to get 6 with under 2 minutes on the clock.
Brady finished the night 30-50 for 286 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Jets
received the ball back but DE Chris Long spoiled Fitzpatricks clutch
moment by causing him to fumble and giveaway the game as Patriots DE
Trey Flowers came up with the recovery. With that win, Brady reached 200
career wins, tying him for first all time with the freshly retired
Peyton Manning. Tom looks to continue his greatness and become the all
time leader in wins by a starting quarterback with a victory next week
against the L.A. Rams.
